5 Touch Ministry

We live in a world where touch is a “touchy” subject. Honestly, I know that’s a pun, but it is. In youth ministry we have to be sooooooo uber careful because we don’t want anything to be misconstrued as a sexual advance. It is difficult when many youth workers have been sued because of inappropriate conduct. Now, I am sure there are a fair amount of those that are legit, but I have to imagine that there are also plenty that are either misunderstandings or cries for help and attention.

So, this topic is a difficult one to approach.

I want to talk to you today about a 5 Touch Experience.

Before I dive into the topic at hand, I do want to continue with some warnings. Recommendations if you will.

Recommendation #1. DON’T drive a student of the opposite sex home alone. Even if they are the same sex you have to be careful. A youth pastor friend of mine recently shared that he had taken a student home whose parents would not take him to youth group. During one of the rides home the boy asked if he could tell the youth pastor something. It turns out that he shared with him that he was attracted to him! This is a tough world. Youth ministry is not easy. No one ever said it would be. IF you are taking someone home, call the parents to let them know how long you will be, call your spouse and then take more than one student with you.

Recommendation #2. Don’t counsel the opposite sex. If at all possible have someone of the opposite sex with you or even better, have them do the counseling.

Recommendation #3. Don’t let extended length hugs go on with opposite or same sex students. There has been a trend over the last several years where guys hug for a long time and even “snuggle.” This can easily lead to problems.

That all being said, I think that many students are missing out on a lot of appropriate affection from adults. A former student of mine didn’t understand that the way another adult was holding him was inappropriate because he never was hugged by his dad. I think that happens too often.

So, I introduce to you the 5 touch experience.

Imagine if every student was “touched” 5 times every time they show up at your ministry.  Let me explain.

1) High five/knuckles as they walk in to the building of your meeting room. A simple touch.
2) Handshake – “Good to see you.” Super easy and not invasive.
3) High five as they walk into the meeting room. As you open the doors have someone standing at the door giving out high fives as they enter.
4) Side hug by someone they know. “Glad you are here.” There is plenty of discussion in the youth ministry world whether or not front hugs are appropriate. To be safe, stick with the side hug. It may be a little awkward, but it is pretty safe.
5) Hand on shoulder as they are prayed for.
These are very simple ways to do some appropriate touches. Students need it. We all do. Start doing this at your next meeting.

Instagram It

Instagram is your friend. This is a great ministry opportunity to grab onto right away. Your students are on it all the time. They are uploading pics and double clicking others pics to “like” them. Create an account for your youth ministry that is strictly youth ministry stuff. Follow your students on Instagram with this account. Let them know about it. They will want their friends to see the pics as well.

Use #hashtags. Hashtags are used to find other pictures that are dealing with similar topics. People will search for specific things they are interested or things that match their own pictures/hashtags. You can sort of tag people like you do in Facebook. The difference is you need to do it in your comments by using their Instagram name and the @ symbol.

If you are new to Instagram then play around with it. The idea is that you use a filter to alter your picture slightly. You can also blur out everything but certain sections so the focus is on a part you want. There are other apps that can work with Instagram as well. Instacollage will take several photos and put them together in fun frames. You can also put text on your pics with this app. Instaeffect has tons of crazy effects you can add to your pics. Many apps are trying to capitalize on Instagram. Play around with a few and find your favorites and delete the others.

Explain to parents how to use this app and have them follow you. Then you can upload pics from the retreat, camp, etc. This is a great way for them to see what is happening with their own kids and for you to show off what your students are doing. (keep in mind this would not be a good place to post pictures of the dumb things you do at camp. Parents tend to get concerned when they see their own children doing the cinnamon challenge).

Check out these guys with their song Instagram It. Hilarious. Thanx Kirk and Tyler.

Question of the Day (Video Style)

by Erik w/a "k" on October 12, 2012 at 2:40 PM

As students are walking in before your weekly meeting have them answer one question that correlates to your message for that day. Tell them they have 15 seconds to answer on video. Get about 6-10 responses. Don’t use more than 10 responses. If you go over that you begin to lose the interest of your students and it gets too long (not everyone will keep their answer to 15 seconds).

If you are using a tape format video camera you can plug into your system and show it straight from your camera onto your TV or projection unit. Make sure that when you are filming you start and stop right away and don’t let the film keep rolling. This will eliminate the need for editing. If you are using a card format you will have several small video clips. This makes it more difficult to show one continues video.

A couple of options to make this work for you. You could edit it quickly in whatever editing program you have. iMovie will let you play your files you drop in without having to “share/export” it using preview mode. It’s full screen and you can add a quick title to the front end of it too. Another option would be to drop it into pro presenter, media shout, easy worship, etc. Then you can click through each file as soon as the next one is done, as if they are part of one video. Those programs usually include a fade in and out between slides, so it appears that you did some editing.

There is another option you could go with. Get your 6 – 10 students who are going to answer your question of the day prepared to answer. Line them up and have them answer one at a time right after the other. That way you have one continuous video with no editing.

Remember: 1) Students love to see themselves on screen (usually). 2) Video is always a great way to do something different than just you speaking the entire time. 3) You look like a “hero” because you made the video on the spot and used it during that event. Win, win, win.

Make a Video Parody

by Erik w/a "k" on October 8, 2012 at 8:12 AM

For the kick off to our fall middle school midweek program (Crash) we decided to let students know that we are available to them in a creative way. We handed out “business” cards that included our contact info. Each volunteer had a personalized one that included their cell number, email and the youth ministry website. To help them remember to use the business card we decided to do a video parody. Call Me Maybe is still a huge song and is surprisingly getting tons of traction still! So I found an instrumental track that someone had put on youtube. The guy who made it said to feel free to use the music for anything you wanted to.

I downloaded the song using a youtube downloader called keepvid.com I used the audio file and began to write lyrics for the song. This is something I love doing. I have written parodies for much of my adult life. I then used garageband. I dragged the audio file into garageband and used a usb microphone (Blu snoball) and had one of the girls on our staff sing and record the lyrics.

Then it was time to shoot the video. Sean and Michelle (our middle school pastors) set up the run through and used our youth center as the place for the shoot. All our volunteers had their Crash shirts on and practiced enough to make it a “one shot” video. To make it a little easier everyone had a certain section they were in charge of memorizing. Turned out pretty good! Sean is a master in after effects so you see a little bit of that in there too. Our students loved it.

This is a pretty simple thing you can do today. It takes a little time to rehearse and all, but totally doable. Check out the “pre-edited” version here. http://youtu.be/AWM6aC0yxjg
